So, have you ever wondered what those mysterious lines and spots on your nails mean? Today, I wanted to go over two questions I frequently get asked in regards to nail oddities and looking at decoding the messages your nails might be sending.
Vertical and Horizontal lines
Vertical Lines: Often a natural part of aging
Horizontal lines: Could indicate trauma or a potential health issue. Investigate further with your primary doctor or podiatrist if you spot these lines
2. White Spots or "Calcium Spots"
Those little white spots:
Usually harmless and can result from minor injuries or nutritional deficiencies. They can also be the beginning stages of a fungal infection, or recently using a new nail polish or nail polish remover. Deficiency in nutrition are usually linked to zinc and calcium, although if you have problems with digesting proteins, this may occur, as well. Those are common reasons, however they also can reveal deeper issues as well. So, again if its worrisome and doesn't go away within a week, or you are seeing these regularly, it is best to check with your doctor. These really are common though and something I see a lot of in my profession. I've had them on and off since I was a little girl, and mine always have gone away rather quickly. If however, its from a new polish or polish remover, you can usually confirm by taking a gentle file or buffer to that nail, and lightly buffing the nail plate. If this is the cause, the white spots will easily buff away. Be sure to use a good base coat the next time you apply your polishes. ( base polish also helps prevent yellowing of your nails due to polish)Your nails are like tiny messengers, providing insights into your well-being. Understanding these common oddities is the first step in maintaining optimal nail health. I look forward to going over more tips and tricks and sharing with the little improvements you can do to keep your nails looking and feeling their best!
